Battle of the Canadian Olympians
June 20 at Kits Beach
approx. start time is 6:45
{{ Free as can be, and BYOC }}

It is rare that Canada's top 2 Men's beach volleyball teams have a break in the middle of their World Tour season to allow them to train together in Vancouver BC of all places, but also that we will get to see these two World-ranked top 15 beach teams compete against each other right here on Kits Beach!  These guys are going to battle it out for some sweet swag as well as bragging rights for "East is best" or "West is best"!

Bring yo' chair, blanket, sunglasses, sunscreen and chirps as our Western boys, Ben Saxton and Chaim Schalk, will appreciate your support so that Ontario boys, Sam and Sam, do not take home the trophy.

Here's a bit more about our Competitors ... it's highly doubtful these guys cheer for the same Hockey teams!

Ben Saxton - 6' 7" Blocker and volleyball literally runs in the family as is the competitive spirit ... Ben does not even mess around with his Movember mustache.  It's impressive.  Native of Calgary, AB and a standout indoor player, winning CIS championships in 2008 and 2009 before fully committing to beach and forever leaving behind AB winters.  Ben's writing a "Sax on the Beach" blog for the FIVB Swatch Major Series, has had his Twitter feed praised and is quite an adept board-gamer (Settlers anyone??)!  Read more about Ben's road to the 2016 Olympics and let's hope him and Chaim have straightened out their chest bump situation ...

Chaim Schalk - 6'5" Defender and native of Red Deer, AB.  Connived his dad to build a beach court in their backyard for him and his friends ... very keen dad used them as shoveling labor.  "Chaimer" was setter for his indoor team at nearby Trinity Western University, and became the first former Spartan to become an Olympian. With Ben, they brought home a silver and 4 bronze medals on the world tour and a fifth place finish at the 2013 World Championships in Stare Joblonki, which is Canada’s best ever men’s result at that global event.  Wife Lane Carico is a top US women's beach athlete so I bet they never have "friendly" competitions in their house.  Has 4 brothers so it's a safe guess their mum is amazing.  Fav quote is “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” – Wayne Gretzky

Sam Schachter - 6'5" Defender and Blocker (watch out!), "Sammy" hails from North York, ON and won Gold at the 2010 Junior World Championships, on his way to collecting 4 Gold and Silver FIVB medals and becoming a 2016 Rio Olympian.  He owns and is head coach of On2 Volleyball, and says that he sometimes collects sand from the tournaments he plays in.  Got any from Kits Beach??  We learned he has a lucky wristband so will he or won't he wear it for our little "East versus West" battle.

Sam Pedlow - 6'5" Blocker from Barrie, ON, affectionately referred to as "San Pedro".  While becoming Queen's University most decorated indoor player and ascending in Canada's beach ranks, he became a Registered Physiotherapist.  Lucky beach partners he has!  Sam was instrumental in helping Canada secure a second men's team at the Rio Olympics during a grueling Qualifier.  Sam has placed top 10 in a variety of FIVB events in China, Russia, Turkey, the United States, Qatar, and Poland and ... in 2015 Sam once his first ever Van Open.  Sam's got a solid Instagram game ... just go check it out and enjoy.

Many thanks to Ezon Auyoung as well as Scott Henry and Chris Melnyk of Kits Beach Kustom for their graphics design expertise ... and for just being really great dudes who love and support our beach volleyball community!
